The poster created for the exhibition of Auguste Rodin’s iconic sculpture The Kiss has won a prestigious design award.

The poster created by Cheltenham-based creative consultancy ASHA has been given a silver medal by publisher Graphis in its International Poster Competition for 2014

The poster which features a large red X superimposed over a picture of the sculpture of the naked lovers’ embrace has been awarded the medal in the contest run by design-specialist publisher, along with posters designed for IBM, Semper opera company in Dresden and America’s Cup challenger yacht Artemis racing.

Marksteen Adamson is executive creator director of ASHA, based in Eagle Tower, which created both the poster and also came up with the new identity for The Wilson, Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, which is hosting The Kiss.

He said: “It’s pleasing to win this award, not just because it’s prestigious, but also because it’s an international award.

When we were working on the entire brand identity for The Wilson we wanted to make it an international-class destination, so getting an international award from Graphis is better than something local.”

Mr Adamson said that while the design of the poster did raise some eyebrows at first, it seems to have done the job it was designed for.

He added: “There was a bit of controversy because we put a very large X right over the image of the kiss. But we’d come up with ‘x marks the spot’ and it was a simple and memorable image and we were able to use it for the kids’ trails around the town that went with the exhibition.”

Before the art gallery and museum was re-opened as part of its multi-million pound refit, ASHA had been asked by Cheltenham Borough Council to suggest names and brand images.

Its preferred option, The Wilson, was the one chosen, and despite some initial resistance to the name, the identity seems to have become a success.

Mr Adamson said: “It‘s very gratifying that The Wilson has done so well since it opened.

While Cheltenham has festivals, the Wilson is there all the time and being party of something so inspirational is very gratifying. It’s very good for Cheltenham to have this fantastic place on our doorstep.

Receiving international recognition for our part in this big project is really excellent.”
